Argentine Bahia Lawn Grass Seed

Argentine Bahia is the Premium of the bahia grass varieties. Argentine Bahia is the Best lawn grass available for the warm climate in our opinion. Over the past thirty years we have assisted countless homeowners in replacing their St. Augustine lawns throughout Florida. Argentine bahia is very similar to St. Augustin in appearance. With Argentine Bahia's minimal seed sprouts, wide blade and lush green appearance it has shown to be the lawn grass of choice for homeowners in the Southern climates. Argentine is best adapted to the southern and coastal portions of our bahia grass zone map. Basically if you live within 150 miles of the ocean and your location is included in the green section of our map your in luck! Argentine bahia grass provides an exceptional drought resistant low maintenance lawn. Argentine Bahia has shown root structure as deep as 8 feet and survived for decades without fertilizer or irrigation. Argentine bahia does not have the frost resistance that the other varieties have. Argentine is great for any homeowner that is tired of expensive high maintenance varieties such as St. Augustine.

Argentine Bahia's Advantages

  • Unsurpassed low maintenance
  • Exceptional insect and disease resistance
  • Premium quality appearance
  • Low fertilization requirements
  • Dense root structure
  • Great drought tolerance

Replacing St. Augustine with Argentine Bahia is fairly simple. Simply rake back the dead or dying thatch build up, sprinkle Argentine bahia seed into the clean seed bed and lightly rake to cover. Argentine may take several weeks to completely germinate, so be patient. Keep the soil damp but not saturated. Usually two 15 minute sprinklings will provide the moisture needed to stimulate the Argentine to get going. Make sure your soil temperatures are above 65 degrees before seeding.

Pensacola Bahia Lawn Grass Seed

Pensacola Bahia grass is the most commonly used bahia variety due to its wide range of adaptability, moderate frost resistance and inexpensive establishment cost. Pensacola bahia grass is very useful to homeowners in the northern parts of the warm climate areas shown in our Bahia grass zone map. Pensacola bahia is well adapted to and used for very dry and sandy lawn areas without irrigation. Pensacola bahia grass will provide a medium to low quality lawn. with little homeowner effort. Pensacola bahia lawns will not require much if any irrigation after establishment to maintain. Pensacola bahia grass develops a moderate to weak sod.

Pensacola Bahia's Advantages

  • Excellent drought resistance
  • Some frost resistance
  • Low installation cost
  • Fair wear tolerance
  • Little insect problems

The disadvantage of Pensacola Bahia grass for lawn applications is its prolific seed sprouts during the summer months, especially in the southern and coastal areas of our Bahia grass zone map. Pensacola bahia's seed sprout production is the most common reason why this grass variety is rarely recommended for lawn or landscaping use.

Will Pensacola Bahiagrass reseed itself in my lawn? - Many believe that Pensacola bahia's prolific seed sprouts will help to reseed itself in the lawn and assist to further establish the lawn. This theory is true and false. The main problem with allowing your Pensacola bahia lawn to reseed itself is the dominant grass bunches of Pensacola bahia will cause more damage to other less dominant Pensacola bahia bunches in your lawn. By allowing your Pensacola bahia lawn to reseed itself you may end up with less grass and more weeds than you started with going into the fall and winter. If these less dominate grass bunches are crowded out, the weeds will have free reign in the bare spots left behind. Pensacola bahia grass will reseed itself but the success of natural reseeding will cause more damage than simply keeping to lawn mowed close at two to four inches. and applying adequate fertilization during the growing season. One other problem with allowing bahia lawns to reseed is the ability for weeds to also reseed. Bahiagrasses also spread through underground rhizomes (laterally to vertical root growth)
